With the widening of I-76 complete, the next phase of the project has started and it includes major changes for Barberton. If you happened to miss the ODOT meeting from the Ward 1 Councilwoman today, here are some details directly from ODOT District 4.
The next phase of the I-76 project will cost an estimated $34 million and with a deadline of July 2022. This new phase includes widening the freeway to 3 lanes from State St to shortly past the bridge over Wooster Rd heading into Kenmore.
During the construction ODOT will be replacing the bridge over Wooster Rd and closing the ramps eastbound permanently but not until the onramp west and east are completed at State St. The onramp from Wooster Rd to the Kenmore Leg will be removed as well during this project.
The adjustments are being made to limit congestion and accidents in this area due to ramps being too close in proximity to each other. Access roads are being added to both side of I-76 providing access from and to Wooster Rd. See the image above for the configuration.
Details can also be found in the ODOT Construction Handbook for 2019 (at the time of this article) by visiting http://www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D04/Documents/2019%20construction%20book%20ver%205.pdf.
